Pre Season Bow Hunting Practice

Tips to Prepare the Hunter for Bow Season.

Jul 20, 2009 Michael Lambert

Spending a few days a week shooting some arrows will make the archer more comfortable, consistent and confident. Practicing and checking all the hunting gear is key.

Summer time is a great time for bow hunters to get out and practice for the coming seasons. Many hunters make the mistake of waiting for the last minute to get ready and often find themselves unprepared. The old saying runs true with bow shooting: " Practice makes perfect." The more arrows an archer can shoot the better shot they become. Doing a little pre season shooting is an enjoyable and effective way to become a better archer.

Inspecting the Archery Gear

Getting the bow out and all of the gear is crucial. Be sure to check the string on the bow for wear and damage. Inspect the limbs for cracks, and make sure that all the screws and bolts are snug. If a release aid is used look it over to ensure the strap and trigger is functioning. Be sure if carbon arrows are used that they are looked at for any stress cracks. If all is well, go shoot. When shooting for the first time on the season remember that it may have been a while, and don't worry about accuracy. Let the arrows stray off a little, focus on form and consistency. As your body becomes more familiar with the bow accuracy will return.

Practicing Shooting a Bow for Accuracy

Accuracy in bow shooting comes mainly from confidence. If the shooter knows the equipment and is confident in his / her shooting ability than the shot will generally be made. Shooting at least three times a week, at least a dozen arrows each time, will condition the shooter. A good practice routine is to set a target up where the is good area around it to shoot it at different angles. Try shooting from various distances to the target and change up the shooting positions. Once you become better at shooting this training exercise, change it up a bit to test your skills. walk around and pick unique shot that would almost seem impossible and shoot them. Start close and work further away. Shots will be made that will teach the shooter just what their ability is, and what they are capable of. Above all the archer will gain that needed confidence.

Spending a little time on the range can have great rewards. Try spending some time on the range shooting with a hunting partner, try playing a little game of follow the leader and match each others shot. This is a fun and enjoyable exercise that can not only increase ability but, a friendship or bond can be strengthened. Always try to have a good time and remember the rules of safety.
